Guidelines and mission

The line-up of the Maria Matos Theatre concentrates on contemporary creative arts, developing its activities in an interdisciplinary context and opening doors to experimentation with new forms and proposals. The Maria Matos Theatre extends its activity to all stage arts - theatre, dance and music - seeking to activate the areas of confluence between these and creating opportunities for artistic research and questioning dynamics.

From the 2009-10 season, the Maria Matos Theatre becomes a dynamising centre of independent artistic creation in Lisbon, turning itself into an active interlocutor of many Lisboan and Portuguese creative artists and companies lacking their own theatre or fixed structure. Moving away from its previous form of having its own theatrical production, the Maria Matos Theatre has become a theatrical co-producer. The collaboration and monitoring of independent creative activity will henceforth be central notions in the development of the identity of the Maria Matos Theatre.

The Maria Matos Theatre actively promotes exchange and collaboration at a national and international level, placing domestic creativity into a European and global context. It operates in the field of attraction between the local and the global, by subscribing to international planning and production networks.

In a spirit of public service inherent in the Municipal Theatre's statute, the Maria Matos Theatre will be a place where artists and audiences meet to reflect on art and the world in which we live, in dialogue with thinkers, scientists and civil society organisations.
